Tide's First Battle

Dragoneko is sitting on a bench in a grassy park, looking through a book with Tide the Noripup looking impatiently over her shoulder at the pages as he sits on the back of the bench.
Dragoneko: *Closes the book with a sigh* Well, I think I've read enough to know at least the basics of battling. I know you've been waiting, but I wanted to make sure that we didn't just stumble into a battle not knowing anything...
Tide: Yes!! I'm so excited! When do I get to battle?
Dragoneko: *Smiles while stroking the top of Tide's head* I'm excited too! Now we can finally start training! I guess we just need to find you an opponent.

"Excuse me," Cole interrupted, but I believe my friend and I might be able to help with that."
"AW, YEAH! I'VE BEEN DYING FOR A GOOD BATTLE!" Cole's energetic sappup added loudly, as usual.
"Calm yourself, Teak. They haven't even agreed to battle yet. That's assault." Cole's attention refocused on the two strangers. Well, what do you say?"

If we do battle, I recommend you don't count elemental damage at the moment. Otherwise, Teak's going to seem a little OP. Also, 2 questions: 1: standard stat point gains (5 for winner, 3 for loser
)? 2: Shall we "heal" to see who goes first?)

Dragoneko: Of course we'll accept! Tide here has been trying to get me to find an opponent for ages now. Are you ready Ty?
Tide: Yeah! I'm going to do my best!

Yes, not including elemental damage sounds like a good idea.
Also yes, standard point gain (unless there's some rule that says otherwise, I would assume standard is good).

Tide flinched as he was hit head-on by the attack, taking a fair amount of damage.
"Are you okay?" Dragoneko shouted, worried that Tide might be hurt since he had never battled before.
"I'm fine!" Tide called back.
"Okay, so... try a slash attack!"
Tide moved his arm in a quick, swiping motion, hoping he would hit this time.

Teak was knocked onto his back, taking heavy damage from the opponent's attack.
"Careful Teak; these two are strong!"
Teak staggered to his feet. "MAYBE, BUT I WON'T GO DOWN THAT EASILY!"

It was Tide's turn to be knocked back as he was hit with an even stronger attack than before.
"You're really strong too!" Dragoneko observed as the pets clashed again. "This is a close battle!"
"Then I should try to be stronger!" Tide exclaimed as he attempted to jump towards Teak and attack.

Teak again managed to somehow evade the noripup's powerful attack. Cole's unrest grew, worried that the battle would be lost if lady luck changed her favor.
"But we can't let up! Now, Teak! Use your jump attack!

Tide managed to block most of the attack in time, only taking minimal damage.
"Good job! Now try a headbutt attack!"
Tide lunged forward, trying to land what would hopefully be a powerful attack.

However, Teak's evasion proved superior, and the attack missed... again. (really I have no idea how that works.)
"YEAH! LET'S KEEP IT GOING!" With that, Teak leaned in for a bite attack.

The attack hit Tide, but luckily he was able to break away from his opponent's jaws before much damage was done.
Tide decided to try a slash attack again, hoping that he would be able to land a strong attack since they were at a fairly close range.

(Quick stupid question: If I use a water-themed attack, nothing special, just a basic attack that happens to involve the element, does it still count as physical damage, or as something different?)
