Beneath the Ice and Snow Empty Beneath the Ice and Snow

The pup was hatched by a young boy of the tundra, sweet and charming. Born in such conditions, his body took the form of ice, horns like icy shards growing from his head and a body that was chilled rather than heated. His eyes shone a bright purple hue, and he attained the power to float in the air.
His child was ecstatic; he finally had a friend to play with. He had grown up alone in the arctic with his parents, who forbid any kind of pet. “But this will be different,” he said. “You can talk! They’ll have to let me keep you! They’ll just have to!”
The child picked the pup up in his arms. He soon became tired and fell asleep in the boy’s arms as he carried him back to his home. Nothing could have made him feel safer.

He awoke again as they approached the home. The child stopped in front of the door of the small wooden shack. “Are you ready?” he asked him. The pup nodded, and the child opened the door to see his mother, who had been waiting for him.
Upon seeing the strange creature, the mother called her child into the kitchen, a stern look on her face. Arguing ensued, followed by yelling, then shouting. The pup began to feel sick. He was having trouble breathing, and the fire in the corner was making him uncomfortably warm. He started to become dizzy, the room spinning around him, until he collapsed on the floor. The last thing he heard before lost consciousness was the boy’s mother. “See? He’s sick. We can’t have a sick animal around here.”
He awoke later in the child’s arms, lying in bed as the night passed them by. The pup smiled. At least he had one person he could trust.

It was morning by the time the pup woke up. His nose caught a salty, fatty smell that almost choked out his lungs. He hovered downstairs and into the kitchen to see the child eating bacon and eggs as the fiddled around at the stove. “Bleh," he thought. “Smells dreadful.”
“Good news, boy,” the child said quietly. “Mom said she’ll let us play outside today. Isn’t that great?” He tried to smile, but his face remained pale and sullen.
It turned out the boy was telling the truth. He took the pup to a small hill, where they ran and played together, laughing and having fun in the snow. The pup could breathe much better out here, and he loved the cold, but he still had to rest now and then whenever it felt like his throat was going to close up again.
The boy stopped suddenly. His smile faded, as if remembering something painful. But he caught himself and faked a smile. “Why don’t we play hide and seek? You hide and I’ll try to find you.” The boy covered his eyes. “Ready? Go!”

It felt like hours since he started hiding. Where did he go? Was he hidden too well? The pup emerged from the snow and looked for his friend, but there was nowhere to be found. Worried, he made his way to the house as quickly as he could. Coughing and hacking, he stormed into the house.
Nothing was there. No furniture, no decorations, no nothing. Just the smoldering ashes left in the fireplace. The pup’s heart sank. He had been abandoned.

Beneath the Ice and Snow Empty Re: Beneath the Ice and Snow

A long time had passed since that day. He had searched every inch of the tundra, but he couldn’t find a trace of the child. He didn’t dare go any farther; his body couldn’t take the heat, and his lungs seized up every time he tried to leave the tundra. So he pressed on, cursed to haunt the tundra for the rest of his life.
    And then they came.
The wolves came on him like a swarm. He had seen them around before – they practically ruled the snow – but he had always managed to keep his distance. Now they had caught up with him, and they planned to make a meal out of his icy body.
The pup ran. He ran and he ran for as long as he could, but they would not let up. He gave it everything he got, and he finally managed to lose them. He was safe at last.
A pain ran through his chest. His throat locked up, and he began to choke. “Oh no,” he thought. “I pushed myself too far. Now I’m done for.” He coughed and hacked, his body gasping for air. His body fell to the ground. It was no good. He was going to die here. After everything he had gone through, he was going to die here, alone.

The pup heard a voice in the distance. “WHAT ARE WE DOING OUT HERE ANYWAYS, COLE? I HATE THE COLD!”
“You’re the one who wanted to come here to look for treasure,” said another voice. “Wait, what’s that?”
The pup saw the figure of a human, a strange green creature by his side. The human looked surprised and worried. “This looks bad,” he said. He pulled his bag over his shoulder and began to rummage through it until he found a small device. He uncapped one end and stuck it in the pup’s mouth. “Breathe in when I tell you to.” He pushed down the other end of the device and it made a small hissing sound. “Okay, now!”

The pup inhaled. Immediately his throat began to open up and he could breathe again. The human exhaled, relieved. “I’m glad it worked. That was a close call.” The human noticed the pup’s horns, the center one broken from his time alone in the wilderness. “Sheesh, what happened to you?”
The pup told everything – about the boy, about being alone, about the wolves – and they listened silently, taking in every word. Finally, the pup was finished. “Wow, it sounds like you’ve been through a lot.” The human paused, and then smiled. “But still, I think introductions are in order.”
The strange creature jumped in front of him. “I’M TEAK! AND THIS IS MY PARTNER, COLE! WE’RE TRAVELLING THE WORLD TOGETHER!”
“And you could join us… if you want of course,” Cole chimed in.
“R-Really?” the pup said shyly. He could hardly believe what was happening.
“Of course. In fact, I’ve got just the thing.” Cole reached into his bag and pulled out a purple bandana. He wrapped it around his mouth and nose. “There! That should help keep the nasties out when you breathe – so you won’t need this as much.” He held up the little canister.
“Oh, I almost forgot! I never asked what your name was.”
“My… My name?” The pup paused. “I don’t have a name.”
“Oh,” Cole paused. “Then we’ll have to think one up for you, won’t we?”
“OOH! I GOT IT! HOW ABOUT ‘TUNDRA’?”
“‘Tundra’…” Cole smiled. “I like it. Welcome aboard, Tundra.”
