    The Explodering (Hatching the Egg)

Post by Miranda on Sat Apr 20, 2013 8:13 pm

    Title: The Explodering

Summary: After barely surviving a catastrophic explosion, Miranda flees to the woods, now without a home. With nothing but the basics, can she survive alone? Or will she meet a new friend who can help her?

    Word Count: Who knows

”Aw, c’mon…” Slipping once again out of her new home, an old oak tree, Miranda scraped her bare hands against tree bark and caused black mud to smear her palms. Grabbing onto a branch for leverage, she winced back the pain her hands were now under and hauled herself back onto the thick branch she now slept on. She threw her legs over onto the tree and lay down, trying to find a comfortable position. Doing so in a tree was VERY hard.
Using the charred remains of old clothes, bedsheets and tablecloths as a blanket, Miranda tucked herself back in and tried to get back to sleep. She looked at her clock. It was 3am.
“Uuuugghh.” Rubbing her eyes, the uncomfortable huldra realised sleep was now not an option, and was about as likely as finding a Travelodge in the freezing woods. She turned instead to face the sky, and stared up into the stars. She was lucky in that respect, that there was no light pollution to hinder the beautiful view. Her leg started to sting as the burn was exposed to the cold, stinging air. Far off into the distance, she could still see her house, the blaze just now surrendering to the cold night wind. Pulling the charred sheets closer to her body, she fished in her straw bag hanging from a branch, looking for the one thing that had survived the explosion. A strange letter.
    “Hello Yognau(gh)t!
If you are reading this letter, it means I have took the time to write to you because you have found a yogpet egg! Before you read on, if you have in fact not found an egg, please disregard this letter and press the selfdesctruct button below.
    O -press to selfdestruct letter
Ok, if you are reading on I’m assuming you have found either the Ridgedog/Teep line egg. Now I’m not sure which, since there was a slight mixup that involved some dinosaurs escaping and laying their eggs in the yogpet boxes…also if you hear roars coming from your egg, its a T-Rex. Run.
Now, I assume you have kept your egg safe, free of any cracks or damage. Now all you need to do is hatch it! I will send you another letter containing all the information on hatching, care and needs soon. This letter will be sent by my very own invention, Creeper-Mail! Now hopefully the creeper won’t explo-“
The rest of the letter was too charred to read. The creeper, had in fact, exploded. What a success creeper-mail turned out to be, destroying her home and burning everything she had to cinders. Fleeing to the woods was the only option now that she had no house, but Miranda had made sure she’d packed a straw bag containing sheets, food, her book, the letter, and of course the egg. Miranda had wrapped it in a scarf to protect it, but the damage was already done. Because of the explosion, the egg had been burned one side, and the previous light brown had turned an ugly charred black. Wiping away the ashes only caused the egg’s surface to crumble away at her fingertips and swirl away into the air. “I assume you have kept your egg safe, free of any cracks and damage…yeah right.” She whispered to nobody but the air. Maybe now was the time to recite a traditional poem to the egg, like she always did. Poems passed down from generations of labour and hardship were more beautiful than any other, she thought. Adjusting herself to a more comfortable position, she rummaged in her straw bag for her book, which contained many poems all written by the people she used to live with. Opening the poem book, she prepared to recite while reaching to get the egg out of her bag. It wasn’t there.
“Wh…what?!” Rummaging around further, her motions became more frantic as her efforts came to no avail. “No! Where is it?” Sweat started to form on her brow as she looked deeper and deeper into her bag, but found nothing. “But…I had it when I climbed this tree!” Was it on the ground? Had she dropped and smashed it? Regardless of how much pain she knew it would cause, the panicked Miranda just flopped out of the tree, not bothering to climb down. A sharp pain attacked the foot which she fell on, which then sharply coarsed through her leg and her tailbone. “A…Ah…” Finding it hard to get up, Miranda wiped a tear from her eyes and bit her lip, her back slumped over like a wounded animal. Managing to reach the straw bag, which had fallen with her, she pulled out a torch and pulled the head against the tree to light it. Her vision was met with nothing but the forest floor and trees. “Oh…” Using the tree she had just fallen from as a back rest, she sat up and moved the torch around. “I guess I’ll never find my egg…I’m sorry…” Suddenly, a sight lit up her vision, illuminating the darkness and capturing her eyes. A small cave opening, radiating a bright light, with a burnt, ashy trail leading in. Following the trail, hoping to find her egg, the cave pulled her in…

Summary: After finding shelter in a nearby tree, Miranda realises the gravity of her situation and tries to adjust to life in the forest. However, after losing her yogpet egg, she must leave her place of sanctuary, and find her egg once again.

Reason for writing: Obsession with yogpets and hope of a +1 Intelligence

Grasping her torch with a desperate grip, Miranda approached the cave, although fairly hesitantly. Never much of a fighter, she prefered to solve her problems peacefully, usually with bread or seeds. This didn't work very often, however. Inspecting the trail of ashes leading into the cave, she noticed they felt grainy, warm and made her fingers feel light and tingly, just like the ashes from her egg. Desperate to find it, she brandished her torch, her chosen weapon against the creatures of the darkness, and travelled deeper into the dark abyss.

Used to the darkness, Miranda's eyes didn't suffer much under the uninviting conditions, it was her other senses that bore the full brunt. Her nose was assaulted by the disgusting smell of damp and rotting flesh, and her fingers and bare feet were worn by hard, scratchy stone and cold damp rocks. Trembling with fear, Miranda crouched down and held onto the cave wall, slowing down her motions. The groaning noises coming from deep within the cave did not help her confidence. Wiping sweat from her brow and biting her lip, the terrified Miranda went on, torch in hand. The trail of ashes was getting thinner and thinner.

Using her fingers to feel her way through the sable labyrinth, she continued to follow the trail, worming her way through narrow passages and tiptoeing through scary tunnels. Eventually, as always happens, the trail of ash got thinner and thinner, and eventually died out. Her egg was nowhere in sight. "Wah...what?" After wandering the cave feeling terrified, pained and yet hopeful, now she just felt...hopeless. As if on cue, an arrow whizzes past her head.

Her brain registered nothing but the projectile scraping her shoulder and the blank of bones. Unable to feel her way through the dark passage, she held up her torch to try and see her assailant, but a drop of water snuffed it out. She was going to die. Another arrow whizzes past her head, snapping her brain into action. She ran.

Deeming skeletons as "baddies" and not as "goodies", the defeated huldra knew the only way to save her life was to escape. To where? She didn't know. Attempting to get away, she took one step in the opposite direction, but her efforts were in vain. She fell, deep down into a ravine.

I'm not a writer, but I tried my best! In the thrilling conclusion, what will happen to our protagonist? Find out in The Explodering, part 3!

    Title: The Explodering Part 3

"Uh...urgh..." Dripping onto her face and entering her nose, the freezing, murky water brought Miranda back to life and rose her from unconsciousness. How long had she been lying there in the dark? Her eyes still not yet open, she sat up groggily, rubbing her head in pain. She couldn't tell if what she was feeling was water or blood. Not courageous enough to open her eyes, Miranda tried to remember the last thing that had happened to her. She was in a cave...then something happened...and she fell...? Why was she in the cave in the first place? She couldn't remember.

"Wh....where?" Echoing into her ears, all Miranda could hear was the resonant dripping of water that had been previously wetting her cheek. It was time to open her eyes.
"Ah...huh?" What she had expected to have been a damp cave was in fact something very different...she was in a library.

After allowing her eyes to adjust to the bright light, Miranda realized exactly how injured she was. Finding it increasingly difficult to stand up, she simply slumped onto a nearby bookcase, too dizzy to concentrate on anything. It turns out what she had felt was blood. Vision fading in and out, she could only look up for 5 seconds before closing her eyes again. What she could see was a huge ravine above her head, precarious stone blocks threatening to topple onto her head at any second. Had she fell into a stronghold? She had only heard about them in folklore. Accepting the fact she was never going to escape this place, knowing this would be her end, and tired from exhaustion and her head injury, she fell asleep once more...

    Pant, pant, pant...yap!
"Ugh...I don't want to wake up yet...huh?!" Opening her eyes with a start, and coughing up a bright purple powder, Miranda looked around the room for the obnoxious noise. Was she still in the library? Why couldn't she just sleep already and not wake up...
    Yap! Yap, yap!
Grogilly forcing herself to stay awake, she noticed her head felt heavier. Patting her temples, she felt bandages... "AH!" Jumping up, but stumbling around from dizziness, she heard something hit the wall followed by a 'yelp'. In the corner, thrown into the stone brick, was a small, purple creature with very large ears. "Wah...what are you?" The creature suddenly turned to face her, showing it's large yellow eyes. Except one side was ravaged by a huge, painful looking burn. In the same corner was half an egg, black ash scattered all over the floor...

Memory and mind still rather hazy, Miranda struggled to link the strange creature and the broken egg together. It was difficult for her to remember she once owned the egg, nevermind that she had been looking for it in the first place...
"U..uh..." The sight of the purple ball jumping into the half of an egg shell and rolling around snapped her memories back into place. "Wait...are you...?" As if in agreement, the pup yapped and ran up to her with hopeful eyes. He looked like he wanted some love. Had this fuzzball really hatched from her egg? So she didn't really kill it? "Come over here, then..." Bouncing happily, while yapping in excitement, he bounded over to her and received a hug. He was covered in soft fur, and felt really smooth. While the strange creature was in her arms, Miranda had a chance to inspect him. He had a small tuft on his head, and a large burn down one side of his face...the exact same side the egg was burned! "So you must be a 'yogpet' huh...do you want to stay with me? I'm sorry about everything that's happened, and I'm sorry you got burned, and I'm sorry you were stuck down here, and I'm sorry I'm stuck down here...but maybe we can start again! Miranda and..." At that moment, a hollow wind blew through the library, swirling the cinders into the air. "Cinder! Miranda and Cinder. So what do you say?" Whipping around the room, unable to contain his excitement, the wuffpup let out a huge blast of energy! There was definitely not silence in this library! Nodding his head up and down, he started licking Miranda's nose. "Hehe...ok, calm down! I don't care if we're stuck down here forever, you can keep me company!" Looking around with a face of sudden realization, the newly befriended Cinder allowed sparks to fly from him. He wouldn't allow Miranda to get stuck in the library! Straining, focusing all of his energy, Cinder started channeling his power...POOF!
